Your science dollars at work, NOAA has reported the sad news that no evidence of mermaids has ever been found.  Are you more disappointed by the news or that NOAA actually needed to make a press release about it?  Apparently Animal Planet ran a show last month that appeared to be a documentary on evidence supporting the existence of mermaids, and of course a few of the cat-hoarding people who turn to Animal Planet for their NEWS SOURCE thought it was real and have since deluged the channel with requests for more information.  So your two remaining options are to check out the famous Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, NY, or to visit MACNA this year, be sure to bring your best pickup lines!
