At the July 12th International Coral Reef Symposium leading scientists from Australia’s Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies are now saying the resilience of the Indo-Pacific over the Caribbean is a natural result of seaweed growth and the presence of more herbivorous fish. For thousands of years iron-rich dust clouds blown in from the Sahara have been blanketing Caribbean waters allowing seaweed and algae to flourish at a higher rate then their Indo-Pacific counterparts. These prevailing dust clouds coupled with a smaller amount of herbivorous fish species, makes Caribbean regions much more susceptible to human interference. However, it is very refreshing to hear new science pointing towards fundamental and natural occurrences. Read more here!
