Screen Shot 2014-10-19 at 11.46.14 AMThe Kamo Aquarium, located in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, boasts a Guinness Book of World Records recognized jellyfish exhibit. The Berlin Zoological Garden is one of the world’s largest zoos. The exciting part? These two monstrous establishments are partnering up by the end of the year.

The German zoo also houses an aquarium, and reached out to Kamo for their expertise. The couple plan to swap animals and share expertise. So what’s the Guinness record all about? The Kamo Aquarium hosts the most species of jellies in the world! This past June, the aquarium revealed their jelly display in a stunning tank, about five meters long, and drew in a staggering 500,000 visitors just in the first four months. For some scale of what these numbers mean, Kamo averaged 98,000 visitors a year since 1998 due to a management crisis. Observing this impressive level of growth, the Berlin Zoo approached Kamo about a partnership in early September. They’re on a mission to learn from the growth, as well as observe jellyfish breeding techniques. This also poses an opportunity for the Kamo Aquarium to learn about the understudied European Jellyfish. Directors of both aquariums are excited about the partnership for obvious reasons. Always the curious wanderer, I’m quite excited myself and hope to visit both facilities. I need to see if JetBlue is hiring anytime soon – my travel expenses are getting out of control. Those residing in either area, please pass along your reviews!
