Fish Build A Better Wind Farm

school Fish Build A Better Wind Farm
Current wind farm technology has hit the proverbial wall with efficiency of the current turbine design almost maxed out.  They have to be spaced apart to avoid turbulence from other turbines and this cuts down on the number of turbines in a given area.  Today’s tech puts out an average 2 watts per square meter (on productive sites) of farm land.  At that rate, even an efficient LED fixture for your reef would require a significant chunk of land.  The old propeller style units have their setbacks but a research team from Caltech has turned to schooling fish to help push wind energy to the next level.… More:

Throw In Delivery And We Have A Deal!

aquavista1 Throw In Delivery And We Have A Deal!If you’re like me, you often wake up with a stiff back from sleeping with a wad of $4.9 million burning a hole in your pocket.  Life is rough, am I right?  It’s hard coming up with ideas as far as what to spend that kind of money on.  Maybe I could spend a few bucks on someone that could follow me around all day and do all my thinking for me.  Or I could just call the master of the frivolous wastes of money, Stuart Hughes and let him come up with some fantastic ideas!… More:

Being a Better Reefer: Keeping it Real

aaakeep it real Being a Better Reefer: Keeping it RealUnless you walk around with your head firmly planted between your posterior set of cheeks, you’ve probably noticed the current trend towards more organic foods and products.  The reason for this craze is that all those added chemicals designed to increase shelf life or make things taste better may be slowly destroying our bodies.  While the prospect of never worrying about my post apocalyptic twinkie stash going bad is comforting, the thought of what living off the fluffy yellow dyed pastries would do to me is frightening.  If we’re becoming more conscious of what we put in our bodies is it such a stretch to put the same thought into what we put in our tanks?… More:

New “High End” Corals

aaafavia BG New High End CoralsRecently I was talking with a fellow reefer and the phrase “High End” came up in reference to certain zoanthid corals.  For those that don’t know me, I’m not one for the multitude of common names attached to corals.  A simple, actually common name is ok.  I don’t have a problem with not using scientific names for everything and I understand the marketing behind the craze but more often than not it goes too far.  Then going further and attaching the label “High End” to a coral seems excessive and almost a vulgar use of the term.  Can a coral really be “High End”?… More:

$20 Just For Reading This!

Sometimes we accept things as they appear just because everyone we talk to says the same thing.  This hive mentality can create hype around some products that never really goes away.  Some of this is due to marketing, while sometimes it’s just a result of misinterpreted information that gets repeated from reefer to reefer like a game of telephone.  If we just do a little research on our own and look beyond what everyone else is saying, we can find the facts.   Click for your $20!… More:

Large New Reef Discovered in the Mediterranean

Alboran Sea map Large New Reef Discovered in the MediterraneanThe new reef, discovered during the Oceana Ranger’s 2011 expedition, is estimated to cover 10 hectares or just shy of 25 acres.  That is a lot of reef to have just been discovered in the Mediterranean.  The newly discovered coral oasis sits on a sea mount with its peak between 320 and 400 meters below the surface.  Situated in the southeast Alboran Sea, the discovery made possible with the use of an ROV capable of working at depths up to 600 meters. What makes this so amazing is that most of the information concerning these discoveries in the Mediterranean is poor and has to do with small or dead reefs.  To find an expanse of gorgonian forest that covers almost 25 acres and grows over 1 meter off the substrate is astounding.  The U.N. has called for the protection of such deepwater species of coral, in the past, due to their vulnerability.  Most of the known reefs in that area have been destroyed from bottom trawling, large extensions of European waters, and natural calamities. I think it’s great that we are still finding hidden and unspoiled locations like this.  I’m sure as technology advances and we can probe deeper and deeper we will find even more incredible places.… More:

Being a Better Reefer: Asking for Help

aachemistry no Being a Better Reefer: Asking for HelpHaving worked in fish stores for a long time now, I’ve had the benefit of coming in contact with numerous hobbyists on a daily basis.  Though their skill levels may vary they all have something in common – at one point or another they need help with something that has gone wrong.  Whether it’s human error or a bizarre chain of natural events in the tank, every hobbyist has sought the help of their peers.… More:

Cree Ups The Ante Again

aaaacreebulb Cree Ups The Ante Again
Cree, considered by many to be one of the best producers of quality LEDs, has created a new super bulb.  It was created as part of a Department of Energy sponsored ”L Prize” contest designed to create specifications for new “21st century bulbs”.  Cree’s entry not only crushed current bulb technology but created a new standard even for LEDs.  Cree has dubbed the unit “The 21st Century Lamp” and at just 8.7 watts with an output of more than 1,300 lumens it will be at least a little while before we see anyone knock this bulb off its throne.… More:

Red Slime Can Kill You?

At some point or another all aquarists have seen and come into contact with Cyanobacteria.  Even though it is sometimes referred to as “Slime Algae” it is in fact a photosynthetic bacteria and some believe it to be the “primordial ooze” from which life first awkwardly flopped its way into existence.  Its presence on earth can be traced back in the fossil record 3 billion years ago (for reference, dinosaurs roamed 65 million years ago).  Recently, a controversial study started several years ago by one Dr. Paul Cox, a former botany professor at Brigham Young University, has gained momentum as evidence starts to stack in favor of his theory.  Is your life in danger?… More:

Shark Massacre Inside Galapagos National Park

dead sharks San Cristobal Shark Massacre Inside Galapagos National ParkSharks are amazing creatures and I have been fortunate enough to have personally worked with several species.  They’ve held my fascination for years and I can’t learn enough about them (I used to be able to rattle off respiration rates for some of the more commonly kept species).  The following should be viewed as bittersweet and I’ll explain after.… More:
