EcoTech Marine Releases Significantly Updated EcoSmart Live Software

Yesterday, EcoTech Marine released what they are calling a “significant update” to their EcoSmart Live software, the web-based platform that allows users to control their Radion LED fixtures. After months and months of beta testing, and after tons of customer feedback of course, the EcoSmart software is said to have gained improved stability, simplicity, and functionality. Numerous bugs have apparently been corrected as well, and for the first time, EcoTech Marine has become confident enough in the software to release it to anyone and everyone who wants to utilize the tool, though it will still only be available as a beta program. In terms of new features, the updated ESL software will include: Single Schedule Programming – Artificial and Natural Mode are no longer simultaneously programmed to the Radion. Only one schedule is programmed to the Radion, but both artificial and natural are still available. This improves programming speed. Aquarium Setup Wizard – effortlessly takes you through the process of identifying and grouping Radion LED lights. New Pre-Programmed Lighting Schedules – Seven pre-programmed schedules including High Growth Schedule and Deep Color Schedule. Improved Schedule Creation – Improved tools to design and export your own custom schedules with other Radion owners. Share with friends. Lunar Cycle – A basic lunar cycle is now possible which will vary your moonlight schedule along the natural lunar cycle. Acclimation Mode – Acclimate your aquarium to your Radion lighting effortlessly over a set amount of time. Release Notes – located in the lower right corner of the ESL screen lets you know what’s new. These are all much needed features for the Radion platform, and we’re particularly excited about the new “Acclimation Mode”. Too often have aquarium keepers burnt new corals because they either forgot to scale back on the lighting or intentionally left that part out because it’s just so daunting sometimes. The Majano Wand – a must have in the fight against pest anemones

Pest anemones can be worse than a piece of popcorn stuck between your teeth; they annoyingly consume all of your attention, they multiply quickly, sting animals you like and it seems like no matter what you do to control them, there are always a few that appear impervious to any attempt at eradication. As part of the anti pest anemone kit the Majano wand is an easy to use, quite effective and cathartic way to deal with pest anemones in a reef tank.

Help! My Seahorse Just Had Babies!

Or, what to expect when you didn’t know you were expecting. Seahorses are known for their proclivity of having hundreds of babies when you least expect it. Photo by CARSTEN SCHÖNIJAHN You just walked by your tank to discover dozens, if not hundreds of tiny seahorses drifting around your aquarium. These miniature copies of the adults caught you off guard, and now you’re not sure what to do. This guide will walk you through what you need to do within the first few hours to try and save the young seahorses. In the immortal words of Douglas Adams; Don’t Panic! The absolute first thing you must do is decide if you really want to try to raise these babies. Raising baby seahorses is a time, space, and money consuming task. And there is no guarantee that you’ll be successful; very few seahorse fry survive in the wild. Being unprepared means that you’ll be starting from a disadvantage as well. However, thanks to their yolk sack when born, baby seahorses can go 24 – 48 hours without. . . More: Help! My Seahorse Just Had Babies!More:

Reefs In Art: Algae

We talk a lot about how corals and reef life find their way into modern art exhibits, but this is a first.  The image above is taken from H.O.R.T.U.S., a prototype of urban gardening which was on display at the Architectural Association earlier this year.  The exhibit combined bags of algae and bioluminescent bacteria, and fostered interaction by encouraging guests to contribute CO2 from their breathe to the algae, which is converted to oxygen which is consumed by the bacteria.   This article on the Huffington Post details several new exciting displays that make use of algae, including a water cooled PC which substitutes algae for water, allowing the algae to make use of the elevated temperatures from the computer.  Be sure to check out all of the cool exhibits including the Algae Opera and Algaculture, which hints at a future where we ourselves are symbiotic with our tiny green friends.… More:

My "Reef Friendly" Quarantine System

I haven’t been involved in this hobby very long compared to other folks but learned very quickly how much of a pain it can be to eradicate, or try to eradicate pests such as Aiptasia, Majanos, Bubble Algae, zoa eating asterinas, and Marine Ich. When I started, I did what I’m sure all of us have done at one time or another: just drop things in the tank and hope for the best. I recently upgraded from a 70g to a 260g tank and decided never again! Unfortunately, everything I found online regarding QT setups mainly dealt with fish only setups, bare bones systems, or that were more of a temporary solution. I’ve had to treat fish in smaller systems I had setup twice for Marine Ich and went through the hyposalinity treatments using a bare bottom tank, HOB filter, and a couple of pieces of PVC

Details Leak on JBJ USA’s Unibody 108 LED Fixture

At the beginning of the year, an image was posted on the JBJ USA Facebook page that showed three different sizes of the popular Unibody LED fixture. At the time of the image’s release, only the Unibody 54 was available to purchase, though the Unibody 108 and Unibody 36 both appeared to be close to production. Unfortunately, those other two models weren’t quite ready for store shelves when they were first revealed, but the good news is we have just found out that they 108 is currently being tested and its release is imminent. Along with that, we’ve also found out some of the finer details. According to sources at JBJ, the Unibody 108 will have basically the same configuration of the 54 watt model, though it will be double in size. The 108 will have the same 3watt Edison LEDs, which will come in royal blue, blue, and 10000K, though now there will be 36 of them. Each of the colors will be on a separate dimmable channel, totaling three channels overall. This will be the higher end LED fixture in the JBJ USA lineup, and we’re told that it will be offered with wireless capabilities and in a budget friendly option. No word on price or final availability quite yet. More: Details Leak on JBJ USA’s Unibody 108 LED FixtureMore:

Extreme low tide at Coconut Island

The Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology (where I perform much of my research as a graduate student) is located on Coconut Island–or Moku o Loe, in the Hawaiian–in Kāne’ohe Bay on the island of O’ahu, HI. The island is surrounded by a wonderful fringing reef with a well developed reef flat. A major feature of the oceans is the tidal cycle. The tides are driven primarily by the gravity of the moon, and secondarily by the gravity of the sun. When the gravity of the moon and the sun pull on the ocean at approximately a right angle to each other we get the so-called neap tides, which have the smallest tidal range (the difference between high tide and low tide) for the month. We get neap tides around during the first quarter and the third quarter of the lunar cycle (i.e., twice per month). When the gravity of the moon and sun pull… More:
