Puffer Fish Responsible for Unique Marine Art

A television crew from the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (known as NHK in Japan) has documented the origin of mysterious marine ‘crop circles’ that were discovered recently by photographer Yoji Ookata on a routine dive near the island of Amami Oshima. The intricate pattern of these circles is visible in the sand, distinguished by “hills and valleys,” and was positively identified as being sculpted by a small puffer fish. Image courtesy of thisiscolossal.com Using a single fin, the fish carves out the circular shape in the sand over the course of a day or so in order to attract a mate. Once a mate is found and eggs are laid in the center of the circle, the sculpture’s ridges further function as a “natural buffer to ocean currents that protect the delicate offspring.” This discovery is the first of its kind and points to the complexities of ocean ecology, which we have only just begun to uncover. Read more here!

Diving the Philippines: The Center of Marine Biodiversity

The Coral Triangle covers approximately 2.3 million square miles of ocean and encompasses six countries in the Indo-Pacific: Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, the Solomon Islands, and Timor-Leste. An unbelievable amount of biodiversity is condensed into less than 1% of the world’s ocean surface area: The Coral Triangle (CT) is home to one-third of the world’s coral reefs, 75% of known coral species (~600 species of corals), nearly 3,000 species of fish, half of the world’s seagrass and marine mollusk species, 75% of known mangrove species, six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles green ,

Vossen larval catchers put to the test with Lipogramma klayi

It’s been several months since I raised my first Lipogramma klayi at the Long Island Aquarium. Sadly, I’ve only had two more reach settlement since then.  One of the bottlenecks to the mass production of this beautiful deepwater basslet, as well as other grammatids, is that they are what we sometimes refer to as “trickle” spawners because although they spawn often, they lay only a few eggs at a time. DNA analysis splits identical algae into species

Genetic information allows scientists to divide organisms into distinct species more accurately, especially when they look alike. “[T]hese organisms all pretty much look the same—small round brown cells,” says Penn State biologist Todd LaJeunesse. (Credit: Penn State Dept. of Public Information)

A group of single-celled algae called Symbiodinum—that live inside corals and are critical to their survival—are only now being separated into species using DNA analysis, according to biologists at Penn State University. Scientists can now sort single-celled algae into species—and use that knowledge to better conserve the corals they live in.  Continue reading
