I'm pulling hair trying to decide whether it's a canon 5D MKII or the D700. Decisons, decisions....

I guess if you don't have any previous lenses that IS a hard choice. I'm sure you know these things already but just pointing out to all that the Canon 5D MKII can shoot HD (1080p) video, like the Nikon D90- the D700 can't. So if that's important to you then that's a pretty big difference. I think in general the D700 has better high ISO/low noise ability whereas the Canon has more megapixels- shoot large crop later)
"The D700 does slightly better at high ISO, but the 5D Mark II has a significant upper hand in resolution." (although megapixels aren't everything: D700=12.1 vs 5D MKII=21)
Gizmodo review-This review is a little simpler than DPreview.com and other sites.
In the end I've been a Nikonian for 20 years and am using my old 35mm film lenses to help defray the outlay on the D700 body. I wanted to upgrade my D70 and jumped straight to the D700, partly because I didn't want to invest any more $ in DX (APS-C) size lenses.

thanks!

^^^ Well I currently have a Canon 10D (6.3 MP - 6 Years old) with a 24-70 2.8 L series lens. So while I am somewhat "invested" in canon I am not owned by Canon. I don't care about the 21MP because feel that 12-16 MP on a full sensor is just about right. The HD video isn't a deal braker because I want a quality D-SLR with full frame sensor (can't stand the crop on wide angle lenses). I understand your point about croping but I usually don't do so with 12 MPs I'd still be able to print all the way to 13x19. Besides the more I read the more the Nikon D700 looks better. I still can't believe what Canon did with the focus system. They mated a PRO sensor with P&S focusing system, only because the advanced system is "reserved" to the 1D/Ds family of cameras.

There are really two ways out of my situation at this point.

1. Buy a used Pro Canon and wait for next generation cams (about a year for Nikon or 2-3 years for Canon). Nikon is not going to sit around and D700 has to be replaced in about a year with something about 18 MP FX I guess and full HD vid.

2. Sell all Canon stuff and buy a Nikon D700 with 24-70 and 70-200 and enjoy it for 6-10 years to come (longer for lenses). I am no longer crazy about buying all the new cameras that come out every 18 months, that is why I want to buy something that I am totaly happy with, something that is going to last.

Thanks for your input NaCL

-Wow I didn't know that about the focusing system on the 5D that's pretty lame, especially for high speed sports related photography that Canon basically owns with it's following of their long lenses (ie. sideline pictures at any sporting event).
-Your right I don't crop many shots post-production either; i try to do it as I shoot. To further that point, all the shots I've posted here were shot at Medium size and Basic Jpeg quality to save space on my hard drive. My pictures are actually smaller (file size) now than they were on my D70; but that's by choice.
-Yes, people are already talking about a possible 11/2009 D800 release but that may just be pure speculation. No matter what, the D700 still takes great shots; all electronics will be displaced with newer models.
- Which brings me to your option 2: This is the setup I have and I believe it'll last me over the long term.
-HD video- A Flip Mino HD can be had for about $205 bucks right now.

By the way for anyone looking to buy the D700, I got mine at buydig.com an authorized retailer of Nikon (USA warranty), based in NJ. I placed my order in the afternoon and got it next day by picking UPS ground. They don't collect tax or shipping unlike B&H, Adorama, Amazon. $2395 with a free 4gb card as of this writing (And no I don't work for them or get anything out of this, just trying to help fellow reefers possibly save $)

^^^ Got a slightly used D2x which is coming on Monday. Temporary solution until D800? comes out. I guess I'll be a nikonite too, maybe I'll keep the expensive Canon glass just in case, tables turn, once again. Pictures soon to follow.
