Aquariums are enclosed bodies of water designed to maintain water based life forms. Aquariums come in all sizes, from a [[Pico Tank]] in the size of one to 5 gallons, all the way up to large aquariums located in public spaces. Aquariums are typically made of glass or acrylic and are enclosed on 5 sides. The top is usually left open for maintenance as well as gas exchange. Aquariums have been in existence for hundreds if not thousands of years. Essentially a stone bowl could have served as the first aquarium if the intent was to keep an animal alive. Most aquariums are explicitly for the purpose of the viewing of the inhabitants. It is generally agreed that aquariums have beneficial properties for their owners in the form of a peaceful ever changing view as well as a decrease in stress levels of the observers. Aquariums also serve to educate people on the amazing beauty and dynamics of marine or freshwater environments that cannot be seen without the use of [[SCUBA]] equipment. Aquariums can be one of the following types:
[[Freshwater]] - mirrors a pond, lake, or river environment
[[Brackish]] - mirrors the environment in between oceans and rivers, slightly salty
[[Marine]] - also known as Saltwater
