If your keeping a reef tank, you will have to monitor your Calcium, Alkalinity and Magnesium for starters. Keeping your mag around 1350 will help the coraline to grow and "purple up" your rocks.

most stores really dont know crap either. you need those 3 test kits because you will need to monitor those 3 and dose accordingly, did he reccomend the purple up ? if so does he know what all it contains ? stick to using 2 part and magnesium and water changes, you really probably wont need to dose yet but you can check all levels few hours after you do a water change, then check them all again right before you do the next water change to have a idea of what the up take is on your system and as you start to add corals and coraline starts to grow those up takes will increase
