Hi all,

I have an upside down jelly that I've had a little over 2 years now and I'm a bit concerned for his welfare.

He lives in a 1 gal glass aquarium, open top, no filtration, no pumps. Lighting is a Halogen desk lamp.

I did a water change yesterday, and cleaned the tank out (rinsed with tap water and dried out with paper towels) Water is RealOcean brand, so nothing needs to be mixed, etc.

Noticed last night he had a few stringy, mucousy tendrils that I thought at first were small hairs he had caught.

This morning I turned on his lights and he is very unresponsive. I think he has expelled his zooxanthallae (if that's even possible)

He moves a little bit if I move water around (squirted gently w/turkey baster) but mainly just sits. He is sometimes upside down (for this species anyway) and his bell is inverted. The edges of the bell also appear to be flatter and sort of ragged. If he does 'suction' to the glass, his bell is pulled very close and tight around his other parts and pulsed feebly compared to how he used to.

I have another batch of water my g/f is picking up and I'm going to do another 100% water change when I get home tonite.

Does anybody have *ANY* ideas what may be going on with this guy? Had him for a long time and he's been through hell and back and keeps surviving...I'd really hate to lose him.

I recently injured my upside-down jelly with some tubing (sucked a part of it while starting a syphon). It was very upset (small and sick) for about one month, then it slowly started to come back. Now it's 1/2 the size it was before, but clearly improving.

Maybe you injured it by mistake as well (mine also expelled mucus when injured) when you changed the water. Or worse, you may have shocked it with the massive water change. Don't do that anymore. If you have to change the water do 6 25% water changes instead of a 100% water change.

Let it be, it will recover if possible.

Interesting...thanks! I think it may have bumped a small chunk of LR that I put in there to grow out some zoos on it. If they're that sensitive to the water changes, it could be that the salinity may have been sligtly high as I missed last weeks.

I usually do 100% water changes with this guy. Have been for the past year with no ill effects until now. I'll run full water tests tonight and ensure there's nothing else going on and just wait and see how he's doing. I'll also pull the LR out so he's all alone again.

Thanks for the info!!!

A bump is not enough to damage it. I sucked a big hole in it to upset it. I think it was an osmotic shock (I may also be wrong :) ). Let me know how it goes.
