Biopellets??

Whats the benfit to use biopellets. whats the best way to use them and are they good for sps? is alot of MR's running them?

im using them... not sure wheather its a benifit yet.. but it does add benificial bacteria when used properly.. the use of bio pellets, and a combo if vodka/vinigar adds a complete diversity of the bacteria strain that breaks down the phosphates and nitrates..

i had a algae bloom for a little and almost regretted it but now things are looking good and growing

The idea with bio pellets is to replace vinger/vodka dosing. I planb on cutting over once my gfo needs to be changed. I should run about 500ML on my 120 gallon tank. I plan on taking out the gfo and adding bio pellts at about 125 ML per month till I get to the 500ml then every year or so a small amount needs to be added back. Go very slow and it takes at least 8 wks to see any rel benifet. I think most of the failure is do with using to much at once. the princple of precison is the same as in vodka dosing.

Thanks for you cents! I just ordered one from drs fosters and smith they were cheeper than the others $50 a reactor screens and 400ml of bio!

i've been using bio pellets since aug.2010. sps dominated tank. works for me. i did change 2 diiferent reactors and 3-4 brands of biopellets. reactors big difference....brands of pellets no difference.

Actually the technology still isn't really there yet as far as bioplets go. But they seem to only produce one strain of bacteria but it has been noted that bioplets in conjunction with the use of vinigar AND vodka with suplimental doses of vitamin C gives a full range of bacterial growth to completely dissolve and convert both phosphates and nitrates.

aren't biopellets/vinegar/vodka/sucrose/vitC all carbon sources for bacteria to proliferate, and not actual bacteria themselves?

Correct but they all promote different strains. Sorry if I said it wrong. Sometimes explaining things come out different than what u mean to say.

If you are going to try Bio Pellets. I would start with less than amount for your tank for first 2 weeks. I than will slowly add more. I would also run GFO along with Pellets in another reactor. Pellets seem to control more of nitrates than phoshate. When you start you might notice a white fog in the tank. That will be bacteria bloom. I will also aid in adding Bacteria too. That will help bacteria to attach to pellets. You might also get outbreak of Cyano with Pellets. You will get a film on your glass that has to be cleaned everyday. Other than that you will have low nitrates level. But Nutrient will still be there so running GFO will help. Make sure tumble fast in reactor. You will notice alot more gunk in skimmer. Some people have no trouble with them and some tanks run better without them . Good luck..............

i run a aquamaxx 60$ reactor they work great.. just do not use the mesh pads they will clogg up in a few days from the slothing of the pellets.. which will stop the flow.. then when u fix it and dont rinse out all the pellets you will send all this gunk into the tank causing a bad bacteria bloom(i am talking from experience) i also run a nextreef reactor for carbon.. and another next reef for gfo(seems like thats still needed with the pellets) after having the pellets in my tank for almost 5 months my nitrates are 0, but i still battle po4 regularly..

That's good. I would get two one for pellets and one for GFO. Some people like duel reactor from BRS.

Hey Brando Cad lights is the son (Ray) of 1000 island aquarium in brooklyn on utica ave. Dont know if you know them her name is carol been there for like 30 yrs. Ray used to work there when he was a kid. I used to live 5 minutes away and go there all the time still do whrn I go vist my parents. I was there yesterday and saw the reactor running its sweet. I think the fater who is out of the brooklyn store designs a lot of the stuff. They are working on a LED light for cad lights that looks really good the father showed me the proto type yesterday. should be out in a couple of months.
