need new idea for 10g

Hey all, I just got back from the Waikiki aquarium and was talking to Charles Delbeek (ya ya I know!! I was pretty excited myself) and he brought to my attention that I can not import live rock or corals into hawaii. From what I've seen no lfs here sell any type of coral or live rock. I can collect live sand but thats it. So I need an idea as to what to do. I guess I could do a FO tank but how to decorate it? I'm assuming that no importation of corals and live rock means I can't order it over the net. Any suggestions at all would be of great help. Thank you.

you can try to get it online or see if you can't get some base rock. I would at least try the online route and if that works try doing the same with coral. Either that or get some scubba gear.

Well I have snorkeling equipment, however, collection of live rock and corals from around here is very illegal. And being in the military jail isen't the best place for me and being low ranking I couldn't afford the fine

It would take some time but you could seed your own LR, you just need one piece to start it off. I would also look for others that have reef tanks in your area and find out how they got theirs, there has to be reef keepers out there. Best of luck.

I assume it's OK to collect water from the ocean... Just fill up buckets near a reef area with some live sand. You'll have more than enough life for your tank. You can use cheap base rock and let it get colonized. The idea to throw rocks in the ocean then retrieve them is a good one, but try proving it if you get caught!

make your own rock, put a unique identifier on the rock (such as engraved ssi) place the rock in the ocean and collect later when its all live.

Why can you not import LR into Hawaii??

Would that also be true if somebody were to send you a say 1 pound rock from the states to seed your dead rock?

The only thing you can do is use base rock, and try to find somebody that was grandfathered into owning rock, and buy some to seed your rock.

They banned importing quite a few years ago.

And the reefs in hawaii are not in good shape, dont collect it yourself, not to mention the jailtime/fines it would bring.

I was just at hickman last week, nice post I'll be back there in a few months for training, I attended the maintanence meeting, and did a special class just for 1st bde aviation at schofield barracks (spelling?) while I was there.
