I'm getting tired of looking at my stained pine stand and canope. Has anyone ever wrapped their stands with any kind of laminent or anything to change the look? I'm taking off the dark stain and taking back to the pine color but I dont think thats going to cut it... Looking for something to add a new look to it without having to build a new stand... Any ideas? Any Pics ?

Thanks.

I'm sure it could be done. You'll probably want to look at some sort of laminate surface from Lowes or similar and they should be able to give you some recommendations on adhesives to use. If you are going to adhere something over a previously topcoated piece of furniture, make sure that you sand the coating so that you get better adhesion.

There are some very nice veneers (sp) that can be purchased from furniture repair shops, yet I haven't been able to find many at Lowe's or HD in my area. I work at a shop that used to do custom furniture design for a number of years, my boss is a furniture and building whiz, and he gave me the heads up on some extremely nice finishes.

Are you re-doing a stand and canopy of a tank that is already set-up?

If so, you make have a problem with the glues or adhesives polluting your tank water.

Just a thought.

I laminated my fw canopy and stand a few years ago with oak veneer. The canopy was easy because it is basically a simple box with no trim, recesses etc.

The stand was much more difficult because of the doorways etc. which required cutting the veneer into thin strips and trying to match the grain pattern. Alot of trimming with a router. In other words, it was painful and time consuming. The end result turned out very good. Notice I didn't say excellent. However a few years later, despite my diligence with applying the contact cement properly, some of the veneer has lifted and cracked from humidity and water. Midway through the project, I kept asking myself whether the whole excercise was really worth it, or whether I should have just bought a new stand (or even made one from scratch).

Recommendation- if you're going to try the veneer option, try it on an old pair of speakers or something first. Then judge for yourself the difficulties and time required for job ahead of you. However, if you are very handy and have experience at this stuff a wood veneer is the ultimate refinishing solution.
