I've used silica sand before, and white dolomite, it really shouldnt be a problem.

I would be more worried about metals in the sand, pooring the sand past a strong magnet should fix most of that issue.

i know of at least one reefer that has kept silica sand successfully in a reef tank. there has been debate about it possibly causing high silicate levels but i don't believe there is any concrete evidence proving that.

It should be fine but I prefer aragonite. Silica is harder and more jagged and therefor it is more likely to cause scratches. Not to mention that it might not be the ideal media for critters to crawl through. But what the hay, plenty of others have used it.
