Hi

got my self a free 10 gallon tank (i know its small but it was free)
just thought i'd ask for some pointers on set up
i.e is it better to have over flowing into my sump or pumped, on a seperate loop, whatever.
i know there will be lots of different variations

thanks for any info

Overflowed is better then pump. The idea is to have the "ride" from the refugium back the the display tank as gentle as possible. So when you can avoid mechanical devices by using good ol gravity, it's recommended.

You can have it on a seperate loop, but it's probably impractical. Personally, I'd split the overflow so half of it goes into the skimmer/sump area, and half goes into the refugium then back to the sump (near the return pump, away from the skimmer). If the 10 gallon tank is glass, it's going to be much more difficult to design since drilling is required to make a hole for the water to exit the refugium.

Mutley,

You might want to check out the nanos foum. There are a lot of good little tank people there with a lot of good ideas. This is the thread of a guy who built a little sump into his standard ten gallon with a piece of black acryllic, and some silicon. It is a simple, yet effective system, but you should check out some of the more complicated nanos as well. Good luck, and post lots of pics.
