Does anyone have any DIY plans for a durso standpipe for a 1.5" drain? I am in the process of designing a 329 gallon cube tank. The tank drawing is included. It will be a fish only set-up w/ artificial coral. It will be in an office building so quietness is of great concern.

Thanks for any input!

The plans are no different than a standard standpipe -- except you can make the entire pipe out of 1.5 inch PVC. No need to over size the pipe like you do with a 1 inch bulkhead.

If the numbers on in the drawing are in inches then this might be a tight fit based on where the drain hole is (overflow is 7x7 right?). It would be better if the drain hole is off center giving you room for the elbow that sticks off to the side.

I use "compact" PVC fittings which are smaller than the typical fittings found at Home Depot and Lowes (still schedule 40, just not as wide/long) and the fittings I use would need 2x6 inch from the back of the tee to the front of the elbow using 1.5 inch fittings. As you can see a 2x6 object will not fit in a 7x7 overflow if the drain hole is centered. Now you can get creative and trim the fittings back and glue them together to fit but this can look pretty sloppy if not done right.

Secondly for a tank that large I would suggest dual overflows -- and not dual drains in one overflow. That is much harder to tune. Just two seperate overflows on opposite sides of the tank to help remove surface slicks and provide some redundancy.

As a final thing to keep in mind, the teeth spacing of the overflow chamber will be very important. This is typically the limiting factor in how much water can enter the chamber. Frequently these are not large enough to allow propper flow in to keep a 1.5 inch pipe busy enough to remain quiet.

Good Luck.
