I recently picked up a external pump made by PanWorld and think it is awsome. I also have a Mak 4 and a little giant. The Mak 4 run sload and very very hot. The little giant is medium noisy and still pretty hot. The Panworld runs quiet and only slighty warm to the touch. This thing kicks butt. If you want an awsome pump get a panworld. The sequence pumps are also very high quality but I have not owned one personally, just seen them used.
I second the PanWorld - I'm happy with mine too. I agree on the Sequence too (although I'm running it on a pond, not a reef tank) but that would probably be too large for your application.
i have a pan world on a closed loop. I like it as well. Problem is to get it connected to the sump? With the 20G high (12x24) tank there is no way I can get a vavle on the pump and still fit it in the stand.

I would put a valve on both sides of your pump, that way you can remove it for service with out having to drain your sump (unless you will mount the pump above the waterline in the sump, in which case I will just shut up  )

If you can fit the pump anywhere around the sump, you could make an over-the-side u-tube out of PVC for the intake. Just make sure to incorporate a cap at the hi point for priming.
If the pump is at the sump water level or lower, it shouldn't need repriming from a simple power on/off. The priming cap would just be for ease of floading the lines and volute before initial start-up or if you had to disassemble/drain the system and then restart.
I use that over the side method with my pumps and it has been flawless so far. A cap at the top would have been nice but I didnt do this. In anycase The pump still needs to be under the water level in the sump this way.
