sorry for the delay... i have been dealing with a psuedo issue all week. just finished the final clean up of the floor and towels. (boy is the wife peeved... still have the buckets and all sitting around)

anyway- it is a 75GPD that i got from Buckeye Field Supply.

run the water through the sump to warm it? it would work but i think i would be killed if i add water hoses to all the extention wires running around this little apartment...

the system is always kept full. i don't turn the water supply off fully. i always let a little bit of it run. but i do open the flush valve once i am done.

in my father's dry cleaners we used a HUGE ro/di unit for the washing machines and at the end of the day we would always just reduce the amount of flow to the unit. he always said it was good for the unit. i assume he meant the same thing as letting it get dry....

I wouldnt say it would be good for a non-comercial units like ours.
They wont dry out over night LOL! Or even in a month.
They will mildew to heck and back though if you let them sit for a month, after that in some models the Membrane starts to rot.
Your pops is probably reffering to what it takes to get the water moving through the system (as in amount of time, time savings).
As long as you dont let it sit for a couple weeks without using it your good.
Mildew and molds wont form that fast inside it.
If you dohave to shut it off for a long period of time, then remove the membrane, wrap it securly in plastic (or a freezer bag) and stick it in the fridge in the crisper. It will keep in there a long time.
