Not general as in "my tank will crash", but something specific- Mine is that my Float switch for my ATO water will get stuck (as it did right now- thank god I was near my tank and unplugged in time!!!!!) and my tank will overflow onto my floor, into the downstairs apartment...

speaking of such- what the best switch to use for ato water? I've been using one from californiareefs.com, very basic and cheap- has been working great, but there is no fail safe shut off.

I have the lifereef float switch it works like a charm never had a problem with them. Another fail safe method that works, is to make sure the vat that holds the r/o water is not to large so if the float swith stays in the on position it will not overflow your sump. BTW -- My biggest fear is losing electric for a long period of time.

Biggest fear is the Ikea "computer" desk it's sitting on cracks/breaks because the salt rusts the support braces, and the tank comes falling and flipping over...fish, corals, rocks, computer, monitor, printer, mouse, pen holder, portrait of self in Central park by one of those chinese artists, souvenir from iceland, pack of gum, ipod, froggie doll, and electric sparks flying all over.

haha- i'll have to look into the double float switch. My tank only has one and it got covered with algae. Was still working fine, but I decided it needed cleaning. Took the 'snail guard' off and cleaned it, cleaned the float part, etc. Then put it together and plugged it in. Seems like a sticky piece of algae had gotten stuck on the bottom of my switch, and it stuck! Good thing I was right there and realized what was happening. No damage done- just going to keep the switch off for a couple of days as it added a little extra water than it normally does. Think I'm going to look into a new, more advanced system!

what did you do doing a power outage that long??? everything in ur tank die or did somethings make it?

I was thinking of getting an APC battery backup, but that would really only last a few hours or so.

Unfortunately, Con Ed kept saying the power would be back on in 3 hours. In 6 hours. By 4:00. etc etc etc. Otherwise, I would have been able to do something. It was a total wipe out. Luckily, that was before I got my big tank.

I now have a power inverter. You hook it up to your car battery. It will run until you run out of gas. Haven't needed to use it yet. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way.
