I got the Canon 10D digital SLR camera a couple of weeks ago. The 4-tangs picture was taken with a wide angleTokia lens 20-35mm. The Chevron and Hippo picture was with a Canon 28-135mm lens.

Heck I could not even keep 2 1" yellows in a 60 gallon cube (LFS fish system) for 30 minutes.

And you have just demonstrated very neatly what I was talking about earlier about disparity in size. Also, with only 2 of them, there is little chance for displacement of aggression, another issue, especially in retail/wholesale, yes? We only have so much tank space.

I just wish we can compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges.

Dizzy you speak of a ton of tangs and a ton of tanks yet you do not put 3 tangs together until you get to a 300 gallon size tank. Why is this?

With most tangs the reason why you see aggression is because of territory. What do you think dizzy?

So Dizzy you kicked me, no big deal you still have not either agreed with me or not. Do you add a 13 year old hippo, a 2 year old purple, and a tiny kole to a 135? A simple yes or no will do.

Or how about this question dizzy, of all of your display tanks with 2 tangs, how many of them would you throw a baby kole in?

Everybody wants to come on the board and say this that and another thing yet I answer the poster's questions completely when no one else does.

ah- never mind- i'll just encourage everyone to hit your 'profile' button, and read all of your posts, to date

vitz you are really hurting my feelings :(

why don't you find someone who has posted something that contradicts what I say or post?

Maybe you should go on the thread where you have people recommending reef safe fish without knowing what tank size it is they are recommending the fish for. Yet I was the only person who took the time to research the posters tank and give him an educated response. I was the only person who thought enough of this poster and the wildlife he wanted to keep to do this research. Oh yeah but since I tell him that his setup is wrong, and his livestock is wrong now I am a jerk. Yet every other person has said the same thing as me.

so vitz do you treat all of your fish with 3 weeks of hyposalinity?

Zoofarmer,
You probably have not been around long enough to know that I do not regard "I didn't start it" as a legitimate excuse. People need to exercise personal accountability and strive to be better then that which they dislike. Please hold yourself to a higher standard.

I don't know what agreement you're looking for. No offense, but I find you are too seeking of agreement/affirmation.

Len,
Why don't you send your 'bad boys' over to the Gulag...I mean 'Industry behind the Hobby?' There we'll beat em up, sort em out and send em back to you a little less sure about their infallibility.

no i do not

i buy all my fish after they have been treated w/ Cu/formalin at the lfs's i work at for at least 3-4 wks

do i get an occasional occurence of ich? yes-i've had 2-3 'pop-ups' in app. 6 yrs, that occured on two hippo tangs in 2 seperate tanks, spaced quite some yrs apart-that went away(at least, clinically)

it's never a serious outbreak, and my fish deal w/it easily (all my tanks are reef, or equipped as a reef-w/good skimming, lr, sb, etc)

all of my tanks' fishload is light, or moderate, at the worst

i'm also prepared to accept the risk, and am aware of the risk, as well

but-that isn't really the issue, or the argument here, is it?

Zoo,
IMO most fish aggression is a dominance thing. It's all about establishing a pecking order. The more equal the combatants the more severe the battle. IME the odds on successfully keeping a blue hippo, purple, and Kole tang together in a 135 are quite good. Being tiny actually works in the Kole's favor. It will not be necessary for the hippo or the purple to kick the little dude's arse for him to understand his place. Age does not necessarily equate to size in closed systems. (see attached picture of 3.5" purple and 5" desjardini that have been together for 6 years.)

The important thing is to keep an open mind and avoid feeling like you know everything there is to know about keeping tangs in captive systems. Ideally it would be great if everyone had 500-gallon tanks that were lightly stocked. P. hepatus is generally very mellow. I have 12 tangs in my various display tanks. IMO I could add the baby kole tang to anyone of them without fear of the kole being severely attacked. I know this isn't the answer you wanted but it is based on personal experience and not hearsay.

edited to correct spelling

And oddly enough, dizz, it jives quite well with what I've been saying all along.. but then again, we already knew that, didn't we?

Thanks Len, I look forward to reading what you say, but I don't think you're playing fair by canning my post to a less read section of the forum. ;-)

Part of my post WAS about Kole Tangs though: Do we think a Kole tang would be OK for my very peaceful 75 gallon reef. I have a nice, full grown, firefish and I don't want any fish that will fight him. I have read the Koles are less agressive than yellows...is that true in anyone's experience?

Thanks for the advice all
