Just an fyi. Assuming that water changes and only water changes are at work, and just to evaluate the effectivness of water changes then you come up with some interesting numbers. Assuming your bioload is increasing nitrates a 10 ppm per week and you do a 10% water change each week. Nitrates will converge on 100ppm plus the amount of nitrates in the water change water. or 10 times (1/10) the period change plus the replacement water. and further assuming that you do either a 10% per week or 20% every two weeks or 30% every three weeks etc etc. Nitrates will still rise to 100ppm plus the replacement water just before the water change.
So the water changes will not maintain your system. And definately will not result in 0 nitrates unless you do a 100% water change with 0 nitrate water.
What is important in controlling nitrates or any other parameter is to find other ways of maintaining those parameters. Just as you are doing with the denitrator. Once that is done then there is no need for water changes.
